The Sub-Zero fridge warm freezer cold fix
The fault is in the fresh food system alone: its evaporator, its evaporator fan, its thermistor, or frost blocking its own airflow. The freezer is not involved and cannot help, because in a Sub-Zero built-in the two compartments never share cold air. Most of these repairs are a fan motor or a defrost component.
The Sub-Zero dual refrigeration fault behind it
On a conventional refrigerator, one evaporator makes cold air in the freezer and a damper doles some of it out to the fresh food compartment. Warm fridge with a cold freezer, on that design, is usually a stuck damper or a fan that has stopped pushing air through it.
A Sub-Zero built-in does not work that way. Dual refrigeration means two compressors, two sealed systems, and an evaporator in each compartment, so the fresh food side makes its own cold independently. That is what allows it to hold 38 F within a degree while the freezer holds 0 F. It also means this symptom is not a distribution problem at all. One of two systems has failed.
Sub-Zero fridge warm freezer cold repair cost
- The fresh food evaporator fan motor. The most common single cause. Cold is being made and not moved. Low to moderate.
- Frost blocking the fresh food evaporator, which is a defrost fault presenting as a cooling fault. Moderate.
- The fresh food thermistor, reading a temperature the compartment is not at, so the system stops calling for cooling. Low.
- A door seal that is not closing, loading the compartment with warm humid air faster than it can be removed. Low.
- Least often, a leak in the fresh food sealed system. Real, expensive, and diagnosable rather than guessable.
Fresh food warm freezer cold on a Sub-Zero: what to check first
Two checks before you call, both free. Open the fresh food door and listen: the evaporator fan should be audible once the door switch is defeated. And run a finger along the door seal with the door closed on a sheet of paper; if the paper slides out with no resistance anywhere, the gasket is not sealing there.
Third, read the display. If the fresh food side is set to 38 F and reading above 48 F, Sub-Zero note it is unlikely to recover from a condenser cleaning, so this is not a maintenance job. Compare against what the numbers should be before deciding anything.
One side cooling on a Sub-Zero and the other not
Sub-Zero fridge warm freezer cold cause
The fresh food evaporator fan first, frost on that evaporator second, the thermistor third. Between them they account for the large majority of these calls, and none of the three is the compressor everyone braces for.
Sub-Zero uneven cooling
Cold at the back and warm at the front, or cold at the top and warm at the bottom, is an airflow problem rather than a cooling problem. Usually the evaporator fan is weak rather than dead, or vents at the back of the compartment are blocked by food packed against them.
Sub-Zero fridge side not cooling, freezer ok
Worth stating plainly because it saves people money: a working freezer is not evidence that the refrigerator is nearly fine. The two systems are independent, so the healthy freezer tells you nothing about the failed fresh food side except that the shared parts, the power supply and the control board, are probably fine. The short version of what we do about it is on the main repair page.
Questions we are asked on these calls
Why is my fridge warm but the freezer cold?
Because a Sub-Zero built-in has a separate sealed system and evaporator for each compartment. The fresh food system has failed on its own. On most refrigerators this symptom means a stuck damper, but on a Sub-Zero there is no shared air to divert.
Does Sub-Zero have two separate systems?
Yes. Dual refrigeration means two compressors, two sealed systems and one evaporator per compartment, so moist fresh food air and dry freezer air never mix. It is why the cabinet holds within a degree of setpoint, and why one half can fail alone.
Is this the damper or the evaporator?
On a Sub-Zero built-in it is the evaporator side, because there is no damper feeding the fresh food compartment from the freezer. The usual culprits are the fresh food evaporator fan, frost on that evaporator, or its thermistor.
Can I fix this myself?
You can check the two free things: whether the evaporator fan is audible, and whether the door gasket is sealing. Beyond that, replacing a fan motor or diagnosing a defrost circuit needs the cabinet opened up, and anything touching refrigerant legally requires EPA 608 certification.
How much does this repair cost?
Most of these are an evaporator fan motor or a defrost component, which sit in the low to moderate band. A thermistor is cheaper still. A sealed system repair on the fresh food circuit is the expensive outcome, and it is the least common one.
What customers say
