Sub-Zero fridge not cooling repair cost

The repair ranges from a condenser cleaning at the low end to a sealed system repair at the high end, and the deciding number is what the cabinet is reading. A unit set to 38 F and sitting below 48 F may well recover from a cleaning. Above 48 F, Sub-Zero note it is unlikely to, and that means a component has failed.

Sub-Zero not cooling, and how long to fix it

Most of these calls finish in one visit. The parts that fail most often on a non-cooling Sub-Zero, the condenser fan, the evaporator fan and the thermistor, are parts a technician carries. The visits that run to two are the ones needing a control board or sealed system work, where the part is ordered against your specific model and serial.

What lengthens a diagnosis is a cabinet that has already been worked on by someone guessing. If a previous visit replaced a part that was not the fault, say so, because it changes what we test first and it usually saves you money on the second bill.

When the Sub-Zero refrigerator section is not cold

This is the important split. Dual refrigeration gives each compartment its own sealed system and its own evaporator, so a Sub-Zero can lose the refrigerator entirely while the freezer holds 0 F without a flicker. That is not a coincidence or a partial failure, it is one of two independent systems going down.

If that is what you have, the fault is in the fresh food system specifically: its evaporator, its evaporator fan, its thermistor or its own refrigerant circuit. That case has its own page, because the diagnosis differs enough to be worth separating: the fridge warm while the freezer is cold.

Refrigerator side not cooling on a Sub-Zero, with the freezer gone too

Both compartments warm points at something shared, and in a dual refrigeration cabinet very little is shared. What is: the power supply, the main control board, and the condenser behind the grille at the top of the unit. That top-mounted condenser is the first thing a technician checks and the first thing worth checking yourself, because it is the one repair that is free.

Pull the grille at the top, look at the coil, and if it is carpeted in dust and lint that is your candidate. A choked condenser cannot reject heat, both systems lose capacity together, and the compressor ends up running without ever cycling off.

Sub-Zero fresh food compartment warm: narrowing it down

Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling but freezer is fine

Almost always the fresh food evaporator fan or a build-up of frost on the fresh food evaporator itself. The fan is audible: open the door, defeat the door switch, and listen for it. Silence where there should be airflow is a strong signal.

Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling after defrost

A cabinet that cools normally, then gradually loses the fresh food side over a day or two, then recovers after being switched off overnight, is describing a defrost fault. The evaporator is icing over between defrost cycles and blocking its own airflow. Switching it off melts the ice, which is why it briefly works again.

Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling with fan noise

A new rattle, hum or grinding alongside a warm cabinet usually means a fan motor is failing rather than already dead. That is good news relative to the alternatives: it is a common part, a short job, and it is being caught before the compartment loses temperature completely. Describe the noise when you call the office, because which fan it comes from narrows the diagnosis before anyone arrives.

Sub-Zero refrigerator temperature rising

Warm and getting warmer is different from warm and stable. A rising reading means cooling has stopped rather than merely weakened, so the cabinet will not settle on its own and the food is on a clock from the moment you notice.

Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling cost

A condenser cleaning is free if you do it yourself. A fan motor or thermistor is a modest repair. An evaporator or a sealed system leak is the expensive end, and it is the least common outcome of this symptom rather than the most.

Sub-Zero fridge not cooling with the fan running

An audible fan alongside a warm compartment rules out the simplest explanation and points at the cold not being made rather than not being moved. That is the evaporator, its defrost circuit, or the sealed system, and it needs a meter rather than an ear.

Questions we are asked on these calls

Why is the refrigerator side warm but the freezer cold?

Because a Sub-Zero built-in runs two entirely separate refrigeration systems, one per compartment. The fresh food system can fail on its own while the freezer system keeps working perfectly. It points at the fresh food evaporator, its fan, or its thermistor.

What causes a Sub-Zero refrigerator to stop cooling?

In rough order of frequency: a condenser choked with dust behind the top grille, a failed evaporator or condenser fan motor, a defrost fault icing the evaporator over, a thermistor reading incorrectly, the main control board, and least often a sealed system leak.

Is this the evaporator or the compressor?

If one compartment is warm and the other is fine, it is that compartment’s own evaporator side. If both are warm and the compressor is silent, that is a compressor, control or supply fault. If both are warm and the compressor runs constantly, look at the condenser first.

How do I check the condenser?

Remove the grille at the top of the cabinet and look at the coil. On a Sub-Zero built-in the condenser is at the top, not underneath. If it is packed with dust and lint, vacuum it carefully. That alone fixes a meaningful share of warm-running cabinets.

Can low refrigerant cause this?

Yes, and unlike the others it is not a wear item; refrigerant does not get used up, so low charge means there is a leak. That is sealed system work, it legally requires EPA 608 certification, and it is the most expensive outcome on this list.

Fixed the Sub-Zero 611 freezer fan quickly and cleanly. Would have liked a bit more warning than the thirty minute heads-up call, but the work itself was solid.

Alicia RomanoAstoria

My Sub-Zero 690 stopped cooling on a Friday night before a holiday weekend. They actually answered the phone and got someone out Saturday morning. Defrost sensor. Fair price and he explained everything.

Ice maker finally works after two other companies couldn't figure it out. Only knock is the arrival window was 11-3 and he showed up at 2:50, but he called ahead so I wasn't stuck waiting blind. Panel-ready Sub-Zero in case that helps anyone.

Karen WhitfieldForest Hills

Had water pooling under the produce drawers for months. Clogged defrost drain. He cleared it, showed me how to spot it coming back, and it's been dry since.

Jamal EllisonHarlem

Pulled the unit out, laid down a mat, put everything back exactly where it was. Replaced the evaporator fan motor. You'd never know anyone was here except the Sub-Zero 642 is quiet again.

Robert SalzmanRiverdale

Door gasket replacement on a 36 inch Sub-Zero built-in. Work was clean and fast. Part markup felt steep compared to what I found online after, but the seal is perfect and I didn't have to do it myself.

Gregory PaceChelsea

Constant ice buildup on the back wall of the Sub-Zero freezer. Turned out to be a cracked defrost heater. Two hours total and it hasn't frosted over since.

Alyssa MendozaAstoria

Quote on the phone matched the invoice. That alone puts them ahead of the last three contractors I've used in this city.

Monica FerraroBensonhurst

Dispenser had been dead for a year and I just lived with it. Frozen supply line. Thawed it, insulated it, showed me the fix. Twenty minutes. 48 inch Sub-Zero, for reference.

I like understanding what's wrong with my appliances. He walked me through why the Sub-Zero 550 compressor was cycling, what he was measuring, and what the reading meant. Rare these days.

Steven KaplanMurray Hill

Temperature was swinging from 32 to 50 all day. Bad thermostat. Swapped it out, tested it for twenty minutes before leaving to make sure it held. Thorough.

Home warranty sent out two people who both said it was unfixable. Paid out of pocket for these guys and it was a $220 fan motor. Working fine.

Marcus WebbThrogs Neck

Built-in Sub-Zero sounded like a jet engine every time it kicked on. Condenser fan blade had warped. Cheap part, huge difference.

1990s Sub-Zero that everyone told me to replace. He sourced a discontinued part and got it running. Bought me a few more years.

Sub-Zero ice maker had been dumping half-formed cubes for months. Water inlet valve. Fixed, tested, full cubes ever since.

Repair worked and the tech was competent. $340 for a start relay and forty minutes of labor felt like a lot. Manhattan pricing I guess.
